Happy Birthday Adam

Three years ago today we were all done with the fun stuff and hanging with the new kid on the block.  I had already gone to Joe's for my free lunch and let them know that in the future (i.e. today) that my family would be getting two free meals on this special day.

Adam is doing very well.  He had a great year, a big year for the guy.  Lots of learning, moving out of his crib to join Nick in the bunk bed, potty training and generally continuing to grow.

We had Adam's celebration, though he didn't look so happy in the video, today and will do a party early next year when his friends are around to do some bouncing.  Here is to a great year and another great year to come.

The lead up to Christmas

It has been a fun run up to Xmas this year.  For a long time neither of the boys was much interested in the holiday season.  As long as we can play we are good to go was the theme.  Last week Nick learned about hanukkah and wanted to celebrate that.  And yes for the obvious reason that they get 8 days of presents.

Adam really enjoyed the pretty lights but didn't really get the presents idea until recently.  The last couple of days before Xmas was a near constant barrage of "can we open the presents now" followed by the sad face after being rejected, unfair I am sure from his view.

Finally we got to open some presents from Grandma and Herb and Bev so there was much rejoicing.  Thanks to Grandma for the good day, everyone enjoyed it.

Upon arrival at home I showed Nick the NORAD website showing where Santa was and he got REALLY EXCITED!  He couldn't contain himself and was ready to go to sleep right away.  So off he went, but Adam was not quite so ready.  As I laid with Adam to get him to go to sleep, Adam was talking.  Nick took this none to kindly and was getting pretty frustrated with Adam due to the impending catastrophe of Santa skipping our house.  Luckily they both fell asleep and will get a visit from Santa.

They both only wanted 1 thing from Santa.  Socker Boppers (Nick believes they are soccer boppers) are the order of the day.  Nick was sweet, he said he didn't want more so that the elves could make toys for other kids to make sure they got what they wanted.

Merry Christmas Eve.

That didn't last long

Ok, so I didn't do a great job of keeping up the blog (or so I have heard...).  November was a good month.  Adam was potty trained so now he is a big boy.  He is now ready to move to the next class at the beginning of the year.  He is ready and willing to go see his friends Bella and Colin.

Nick is having fun in school (except for homework) and enjoyed soccer.  His soccer ended this weekend so that is a nice break for coach.  He did great, scored a lot and loved to stop the other team on defense.  When he was on the field the team was lucky to get any goals and nothing more than 1 that I can remember.

There was a school festival at Nick's school.  We got the boys wristbands and they played for 4hrs solid until they shut the place down.  Even more impressive was the dust storm that occurred, we could barely keep our eyes open but they could keep playing.

I have plenty of pictures and videos I have to get ready.  Will get right on them, I promise.

Halloween '11

All Hallows Eve was a success.  The boys went as Mr. Incredible and Ironman.  Dad went as a sad Az Cards fan with a paper bag on my head.  They did better this year with very few rides in the wagon and lots of running up to houses.  One house though caught their attention.  They were a lot confused with the hand coming out of the garage.

Good results today

So a double header good news.  Adam is potty trained! Yea team.  He has had a couple misses but overall he is doing great.  He started as a sitter for peeing but he is now standing up, hopefully he doesn't try to poop standing up.

And for Nick, he rode his bike without training wheels today.  It was in the grass and he fell of course but he learned that it didn't hurt so bad.  He had a lot of fun going down hill.

So a good day.  Soccer with Grandma watching, some quality time with Grandma and the circle pad thing, and finally some good bike time.  Jen made some apple sauce today, going to have some sauce and ice cream, yummm.

Potty training success (and less success)

So the potty training continues.  Saturday was a bit of a wash as Adam didn't use the pot, but rather his shorts for pee storage.  This morning though was a big change, he woke up and asked straight away to go potty.  And he did go potty!  He has gone 3 times with once an accident.  The accident is important because he stopped himself mid pee to go in the toilet, a big point I think / hope.

Grandma and Herb and Bev visited us yesterday.  Everyone had a great time and the kids loved it.  An early night for our house, kids out by 8:15 and Dad by 10.

Mom is in NH visiting Emily and Sarah (and baby) for her birthday.  The boys hope she is having a good time and wish her a happy birthday.

Let the potty training begin

So now we start with Adam and potty training.  We waited a while to hopefully make it easier to transition.  Nick was a star, we shall see how Adam does.

He did his #2 tonight (half diaper / half toilet) so that is 1 less cleanup I don't have to do.  No one said being a parent is not disgusting!

Cross our fingers.

A week of new

We have a few new things for the kids this week.

Nick is in his intercession camp and he went on his first Field Trip! In fact he went on hist first Two field trips. They went to Amazing Jakes and Airworx. He liked them both, though after Airworx he said his butt hurt from falling so much. Below is a picture of the boys at the playground at his intercession school.

The best smile I could get out of Nick.

Adam's new thing is just as big. He is moving out of his crib and into the bunkbed with Nick. They are both excited about the move. Last night was the first night and he did pretty good but came into our room crying at 4am. Still pretty good, soon he will be sleeping there all night and next weekend we start potty training!

Zero for September

Opps, so i guess the kids didn't do anything special last month...  I will have to step it up this month.

Last weekend Dad got to go do Denver for some beer fest activities, lots of fun was had and I grabbed 2 special beers I wanted so a successful trip.

Grandma got to watch Nick play soccer (he did great) and then she took both boys for a sleep over at her house.  When I came to pick them up, they both asked why I was there!  Guess they had fun, pretty worn out as well, both of them took a nap on the way home.  Thanks to Grandma for watching the kids.

Meanwhile, while the kids were away Mom and Dad got to go for a bike ride.  During the ride I encountered a snake, ran over him in fact.  Jen stopped in time and watched it slither away into the brush.  Glad I didn't have a pissed off snake chasing me or a dead snake wrapped up in my bike.

That is it for now, I will be putting up some pictures and videos soon.

Happy Bday Nick

We celebrated Nick's birthday a wee bit early this year. He will turn 5 on Monday. The party was at Bounce U as that is young Nick's favorite thing to do. We got to meet many of his new friends from school and a few old friends from BH. Everyone had a good time. After the party we got to visit the Chandler Fire department and sit in the truck thanks to Stephanie.

The climber.

Go Nick Go.

Gary Gator

A week ago we had a visitor for the weekend. Gary Gator was over to see how we spend the weekend. So we did various things, going to parties, going swimming, microprogramming and visiting hole in the rock. At the end of the weekend Nick had to write some sentences about what he and Gary did.

Monsoon in July '11

Had a nice storm in Chandler tonight, Adam had fun for a short time but Nick and Dad enjoyed it more. Some nice sideways rain, rare site at my house.

Kindergarten

Nick has started kindergarten, hard to believe but he is a big guy now. The first picture is from the meet the teacher night where we met Mrs. McKinley and took a tour of his room. He likes that he has his friend Drew in his class. The second picture is the man himself in his uniform. I know he will do great and he is already having a great time in class.

Looking good.

Summer with the Goddard School

The boys spent the summer, when not on vacation, at the Goddard School. They really liked being at the same school and seeing each other on the play ground. I liked that they were at the same school so the drop off was way easier than at two locations.

The school was great and we would recommend them to anyone. The last week they were there it happened to be an ice cream social which was fun. Now that school has begun for Nick, we are back to two places, but we will always have the memories.

New Hampshire 2011

This July, as was the same a couple July's ago, we went to visit the Lahuts in New Hampshire. This time we spent more time in Portsmouth and less at the lake and had a great time (I am sure the close location relative to the Portsmouth Brewery had nothing to do with that). We were hosted by the lovely Sarah and Aaron "needs my lawn mowed" Jones. We had a great time at their pad, going to the park, playing outside with the bubbles and bug kit, and yes, going to the Brewery. No trip to NH should be without the lady of the lake Mary though, and that is where Nick would love to live, he told me so.

We also went to the beach a few times, had some picnics at the park while listening to music and so much ice cream we were Almost tired of it by the end of the trip.

Dad's favorite parts was the brewery and Annabelle's ice cream. Nick loved the lake the most and Adam was fond of the bubbles. Mom I think enjoyed the time with Sarah and Emily the most.

Lots of people in the tent.

And Emily with the Boys.

Thanks to everyone up in NH for their hospitality and the good times, until next time.

The digital age

Adam playing with the iPad and Nick with the iPhone. It is good that they are comfortable with technology but we will have curb their use a little so as to not get neck strain.

Both playing Angry Birds I bet.

Kiddos update

The kids are getting so big, Nick is like a little man now and Adam is at a great age where he is almost always happy as he learns and explores the world.

Adam loves to talk, learned it from his brother I think. He has a great vocabulary, I am pretty surprised at the things he knows the words for and how many words he knows. Going to be a smart one that guy. He is also the mischief one, likes to covertly do things to Nick and claim innocence. Nick is pretty good at ratting him out though. He loves the iPad and Little Einsteins and is learning to sing songs so that is really cute. He just had a nice saying so I will end Adam with this. Adam: "Bubbles just came out of my butt."

Nick is getting big, he is almost 5yrs old and about to start kindergarten. He had a performance at his preschool and got his certificate which he was pretty proud of (though he gave it to me so he could go play as soon as he had the chance). He definitely likes his play time. He really has his own opinions and is certainly testing his boundries but I am pretty sure he is one of the best behaved kids around. His preschool and daycare teachers all swoon over him when we talk about him, how smart and well behaved he is. Great kid!

For what will be the last time, Nick and Adam are in the same daycare together. They just started this week for a summer at the Goddard School in Chandler. I really like the place and am glad that they get to spend time together before Nick starts school. I think Adam really likes it too.

Carlsbad CA

So a nice long trip gets a nice long post. We spent a week in Carlsbad CA with the goal of drinking good beer, visiting the beach, going to Legoland and running a half marathon (in that order, at least for me). Most of that worked out, the half marathon did not. While on said beach, Jen took a fall and ended up with some mashed up toes, leaving me to fend for myself the next morning (never a good idea). I overslept and ended up missing the race and running on the beach instead, not quite as fulfilling but a very nice time if I say so myself.

Anyway, we stayed with Uncle Herb, Aunt Bev and Grandma in a house that was a block from the beach and 3 blocks from Pizza Port so the beach and beer were definitely covered. Legoland was but a short drive as well.

Nick specifically LOVED the beach, he couldn't get enough of it, actually I guess he could as the last day we wanted to get him up early hunt for seashells and he was like, "yea no thanks, to tired." Other than that though he was a castle making, wave hunting, mound of sand climbing maniac (in a good way). Adam liked the beach but not the ocean, he could definitely do without the water. He was content to stay on dry land and enjoy all that digging and climbing had to offer.

Nick and Adam climbing the mound of sand.

After a few days at the beach it was time to go to Legoland. One day turned out to be enough for the Uncle and Aunt so mad respect to Grandma for doing the 2 days of fun. The boys had fun with all parts of the park and were pretty worn out at the end of each day. They both liked the kids area where you jump on the circles to make music and shoot water at the alligators.

Nice picture of the boys.

Glass is good.

Hi Mr. Octopus

Adam ready to watch Bob the Builder in 3D.

A second nice picture of the boys.

The second to last day was a visit to the SD Zoo. The weather was chilly but I will take that over the Phx Zoo in July anyday. The boys liked the play area the best, Dad liked the Hippos and Mom liked the Pandas the best I think.

Picture 3 of the boys.

Piece de Resistance

Thanks to all that were involved, especially to Mom for finding such a classy joint close to the beer, I mean beach (I don't really mean that). It was nice to feel at home while on vacation. And thanks to Grandma for watching the kiddos.

Toulouse

I just got back from the fair city of Toulouse France for business (and perhaps a little pleasure). There were plenty of long days at the office so the weekend was all mine. I took a bus ride with friends to a city called Roquefort, Millau (for the Viaduc) and Peyre. A fairly long drive and a big thanks to John for letting me tag along. The viaduc has the tallest pillar and is the longest bridge of its type in the world. the tallest pillar is higher then the Eiffel tower, very impressive.

Me at the pull out for a nice view of the Viaduc above Millau.

Cheese aging a natural cave.

Roquefort is famous for the cheese they produce and age in caves for a minimum of 6months. Only cheese aged in these caves can be called Roquefort, about 7km long by 300yards wide. I tried some and it is quite good but extremely strong.

Bryan holding up the Viaduc, thankfully he was there or the whole thing may have come down.

A Troglodyte church in Peyre.

Peyre is a small city near Millau that is built into a cliff. A very picturesque city though there was very little activity so not sure how many people actually live in this city anymore. Great view of the Viaduc from here. The city is on a list of "most beautiful cities of France" but very few people (in Toulouse anyway) knew of the city.

Pont Neuf bridge in Toulouse.

On Sunday I walked around town after a very long night of sleep. The Pont Neuf bridge (new bridge) is actually the oldest bridge in Toulouse. There was a art show going on down by the river so it was nice to walk along the water and view the French art.

Matthieu and Marie at L'anciene Belgique

A goal of mine during the trip was to visit some good beer bars in Toulouse. I visited a couple and the best was the L'ancienne Belgique (Belgian) bar. The bar was quite hot so we drank outside with my colleague Matthieu and his wife (thanks for the company). We had a laugh because a drunk guy got in some trouble with the people and there was a bit of fisticuffs. I was sure to let them know that I did not feel safe in this dangerous city (not true of course but funny).

And on my last day I snapped a picture of the hotel I stayed at in Toulouse and Rogelio whom I work with in Tempe. He is still having fun in Tls while I try to get rid of the jetlag. I do not like seeing 4am, nothing good happens at 4am.

All in all, a great trip. I got to visit with friends and co-workers and even eat at some homes of very gracious people. Thanks to all those in France for the great time and thanks to Jen for watching the boys while I got a week and a half of no kids and all the good food I could eat (on someone else's dime no less).

"Almost" that time of year

It is almost that time of year, when the kids turn into fish to survive the summer in Phoenix. It is not quite that time however as the water is still a lot chilly for the parents. Somehow they convinced Jen to go for a dip in the cold water. Their cost is this picture.

Ready to swim.

Karma and Adam

Well Adam may need to learn a bit about Karma. Yesterday started well but later there were some bumps in the road. First he had some problems at circle time as school, then when Dad picked him up there were lots of No's and hitting of people. Karma didn't appreciate the antics and took it out on him during dinner.

Adam was messing around, eventually slipped off the seat and whacked his lip on the table in Costco. He was much better after that, lesson learned?

So what have we been up to

We have been keeping busy, how about you? So what have we been doing since the Copeland's left town? Well Adam has swim class and Nick has soccer so we are now on the kids activity time of life. We will be keeping it realistic with only 1 or 2 activities at a time so as to keep everyone's sanity intact.

Soccer season means orange slices and the boys are doing as they do best. At this game Nick was redonkulous. He scored about 15 goals and stopped all but a couple, the boy loves to play defense. He is quite a sweater though, just like his grandpa was.

While Dad was away in San Diego enjoying some nice beer, the kids got to have some fun at the water spray pad and the train museum. Looks like playing in the water required sustinance (in the form of cookies).

Adam also had the Bright Horizon spring fling. Mom and Dad joined him for lunch and to help with his easter egg hunt. He is pictured with his girlfriend from daycare.

While Adam may be to young for organized soccer, he still enjoys practicing. We went to the park the other day and he was showing off his dribbling and shooting skills. Once he gets old enough, watch out for the bulldozer on the field.

And last but not least, we have our Friday Donutday to celebrate. As Nick had the day off today we didn't go to Bosa (sad yes, but much further than Basha's). They enjoyed picking their donuts and the drinks and then we sat and ate them outside in the nice weather.

All in all we are doing the things we can do before the weather turns ugly and we stay inside as much as we can.

Luke Day '11

Today was Luke Day and we had a great day. The Copeland's are out for a visit and we got a great parking space, great weather and "cooperative" kids. We did have to leave before the Tbirds but the F15 and F22 more than made up for that. Great day today.

The Guys in a transport plane.

Thumbs up Capt'n Adam.

Nick will be our fighter pilot.

Ostrich Festival

Mom got back from her NH trip and we celebrated by going to the Ostrich Festival. We didn't actually see any ostrich but had fun at the carnival. A Nick funny, there was a ferris wheel there and on Friday we were on the freeway. Nick saw the ferris wheel and said "hey Disneyland, I want to go there." Anyway, fun but hot, we were roasting for much of the day.
